Penang, Pearl of the Orient

The first day we landed in Penang, we did not have our own transport and so we took a taxi from the airport to our rented apartment. It was already 6pm+ in the evening and we were all hungry. The 9 of us and chubby kid decided to go out and look for some food nearby the place we stayed. We were delighted when the guard at the gate told us that there are some food places nearby and gave us the directions to the place.

And so we walked and walked. And walked. Hey, are we lost? No sign of food places. We stopped and asked around. Someone mentioned that Gurney Drive is just nearby. Walk straight up and turn the corner and you're there. OK. So, we headed for that direction.

It's about 8pm now. No Gurney Drive in sight. My arms were already aching from carrying chubby kid, all 13kg of her. Can you imagine walking for more than 1 hour carrying 13kg of load? Of course you can't imagine. Let me tell you how it felt. Think of yourself carrying a pack of rice (10kg), a pack of sugar (2kg) and a pack of flour (1kg). Then walk 4 rounds at the track in the stadium. That's how it felt.

Suddenly, we saw the Gurney Drive sign. Feeling somewhat happier, we were more energetic and walk towards the turning. When we made the turn, !@#$%! What the heck! The hawker stalls are still like a mile away. We could see the lights shining brightly from far away, mocking at us.

This can't be a good start for our holidays. We saw some taxis outside the hotel where we stood and comtemplated what to do. We then decided to just take the taxis to the hawker stalls. What a relief that was to my arms and legs. And indeed, the hawker stalls were really still very far away.

Being tired and hot, chubby kid was very cranky. I hardly ate with her making a lot of noise and crying. At about 9pm+, we took the taxi back to the apartment and rested, looking forward to a better day tomorrow.

Back to Work

It's back to the office today. I was contemplating of taking the day off when I woke up at 7am in the morning, feeling totally beaten and exhausted. You guys do not know what I went through in the last 24 hours in Hong Kong. I'll get to that exhausting experience in my later posts.

Don't worry. I'll write my travel posts as soon as I collect photos from my husband's friends, who took more photos than I did.

A Long Awaited Holiday

Tomorrow, I will start my holidays. A 6-day non-working holiday. How sweet that sounds. My husband and I, together with chubby kid, will be going to Penang and Langkawi together with 7 other friends. Our plans are to visit places in Penang and eat as much Penang food as possible. Then, we would go duty free shopping in Langkawi. Kinder Bueno, here I come. Hehehe... More updates whenever I can borrow "Internet time" from my husband's buddy who is bringing along his laptop and has a 3G unlimited broadband subscription. Otherwise, if I am enjoying myself too much, then updates will have to wait till I am back home.

I just hope that chubby kid can endure this travelling period since she is still coughing and has minor wheezing. Once back, we would then be off again the very next day to Hong Kong, this time, a 5-day working holiday. I have to attend and present in a conference there. Let's just hope everything will be fine, especially for chubby kid. It will be her first ever non-medical trip, followed by a second non-medical trip right after that.

Disney Activity Tricycle

The chubby kid has a new toy. Well, not new actually. It was a gift from my friend, given to chubby kid when she was 1 month old. It's a Disney Activity Tricycle.

My husband fixed it up last 2 weeks and we tried to put chubby kid on the tricycle and pushed her around. And... she did not like it very much. She would only sit on it for a minute. Well, maybe we will have to wait till she's older, when she can really stand firmly on her own and start to walk. Maybe, by then, she will want to ride the tricycle. As for now, she still does not know how to walk on her own. She still needs to hold onto the wall or chair to move about. Sometimes, she cannot even stand up properly. Still too chubby I reckon, even after being sick for more than a month and losing some weight because of it.

So Naughty!

The other day, I was keeping watch over chubby kid. In a matter of only 30 seconds of not watching her, guess what she did?

Oh man! How can she be so naughty? She's got toys to play with.

But she's just not interested. Obviously, the tissue papers are more interesting to her.

A Visit to the Chinese Physician

And so the chubby kid's cough and wheezing continues. I no longer knew what to do. My father suggested to bring her to see the Chinese Physician. I was thinking, OK, why not?

So, my father accompanied me and chubby kid to see the Chinese Physician. There's this funny and a little embarrassing episode that happened while we were at the clinic. My father told the nurse that it was chubby kid's first visit there and so the nurse asked for chubby kid's chinese name. My father told her in mandarin.

"Huh? What did you say?" I asked my father.

My father answered with what he thought was chubby kid's chinese name.

"No la, Pa. That's not your grandchild's name." I told him the correct name.

OK, and then the nurse asked, "How do you write it?"

"Huh? I don't know. Pa, how to write?"

My father tried writing the chinese characters.

"Is it like this?" he asked me.

"I don't know. Wait, let me call and asked." I answered.

And so, I called my husband and asked him to tell my father how to write chubby kid's chinese name. I hope we got the name right.

Haha... and all the while, feeling a little embarrassed, I try to avoid looking at the nurse, who must think that I am horribly pathetic. Daughter's own name also don't know how to write. Luckily, my father was there and luckily, he knew mandarin.

Anyway, we waited for nearly an hour and then it was chubby kid's turn to see the doctor. My father went in with me. He told the doctor what was wrong and the doctor just checked a few points on her body and told my father, what was causing the chubby kid's cough and wheezing.

OK, due to my limited understanding of mandarin, this was what I supposed the doctor said. He said that, chubby kid had indigestion problem and because of that, it affected her lungs, causing her to have minor bronchitis and flu. Therefore, he is prescribing the medicine to cure her of indigestion. When that is cured, so will her cough and flu. And in the meantime, do not give her too much food. If she does not asked for food, then do not give it to her.

OK then. And so, that day, I gave chubby kid less food and less milk. And you know what happen? Chubby kid woke up at 4am the next morning because she was hungry. What the heck? She refuses to go back to sleep until I decided to give her a bottle of milk at 5:30am and after that, she went back to sleep.

Lesson learnt. Do not underfeed chubby kid. Otherwise, I would lose sleep for waking up early.

Another lesson learnt. Must bring someone who knows mandarin with me to see chinese physician.

Yet another lesson learnt. Must learn how to write chubby kid's chinese name in mandarin characters.
